Definition
Buan Noeul Potatoes is a brand of potatoes produced in Gyehwa-myeon and Dongjin-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Summary
Buan Noeul Potatoes is a local specialty product of Buan that is well known for its excellent color, sweetness, and size. Due to its high potassium content, it is effective in releasing sodium from the body. Local potatoes are eaten as main meals or snacks, either by boiling, baking or deep-frying them; and are also used as a raw ingredient in the production of various alcoholic drinks including soju. In addition, the local potato starch is used to make glass noodles, industrial ingredients, and good quality feeds.
Origin and Development
Buan Noeul Potatoes was certified in recognition of its outstanding quality by registering the package with a certification mark of geographical indication at the Korean Intellectual Property Office in 2016. Buan-gun County and the Buan Cooperative Business Association, an integrated marketing organization of Buan, cooperated in the production of ‘Cheonnyeonui Somssi Buan Noeul Potatoes,’ a brand that is available on the market. As the revenues generated by the cultivation of potatoes are five times higher than that of rice, it is considered a trusty crop for farmers in Buan, allowing them to earn a stable income during the winter farming season. The 7th Buan Masil Festival, held in the area of Maechang Park, Buan-eup, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do in May 2017, offered a variety of potato-themed programs designed to promote Buan Noeul Potatoes, including a potato harvest experience and a king potato contest.
Production Method and Characteristics
Buan Noeul Potatoes grows in the fertile alkaline sandy soil of the tideland amid breezes from the West Sea. It is characterized by a thin yellow skin that can be easily peeled off and a glossy texture. It is a low-polluting, alkaline, nutritious food with low sugar content, and can be stored for a long period of time. It is rich in vitamins and minerals, and consists mainly of carbohydrate, with little fat or protein. Furthermore, it contains important inorganic components such as iron and magnesium, as well as vitamins C and B, which is essential to the human body. As each potato contains more iron than the same amount of rice, it is especially good for anemia patients, and it is also good for Korean people who eat a lot of salty food because it is rich in potassium.
